You and your dog have a special relationship:  you look to your dog for companionship, while your dog needs you to be a calm confident leader who provides a safe home, regular meals, opportunities for socialization with other dogs, and fun time with you .

You probably have an idea of the type of relationship you would like to have with your dog. But for reasons that go back to simple genetics, your dog does not view the world the way you do. A dog's instincts to survive and thrive in an effective social unit are very strong and are the cause of many behavior patterns.  The initial step to a mutually respectful relationship is to learn why your dog does what he does. This will solve many problems or prevent them from starting in the first place.
